Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS BALLROOM DANCING? Ballroom dancing is a form of dancing where each dance is done with a partner. The Standard or Modern style of Ballroom dancing includes dances such as the Waltz, Tango and Quickstep, while the Latin style includes the Rumba, Jive, Samba and the cheeky Cha-Cha-Cha.

WHAT IF I HAVE NEVER DANCED BEFORE? That’s OK.  In Social Classes everything is taught to you.  There are lessons for beginners, semi-advanced and advanced dancers.  In each class you will be taught the basic steps of a particular dance. After each class there will be time to practice the steps that you have been taught, and any that you been taught on previous attendances.  Staff members are there to assist you not only during the classes, but also during the Social practice sessions.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR? The dress standard is smart casual so wear something comfortable that you can move in. For example,  ladies, a comfortable pair of dress shoes with a low heel is a good place to start.  A dress or skirt or even pants that you can move in is suggested. For guys you should wear long pants and a shirt or T-shirt with sleeves (no singlet tops).  Dress shoes with a leather sole at the front are good. It can be very hot while you are dancing so please wear something cool.  Remember, you will be dancing with a partner so a shower and deodorant is a very good idea, especially if you would like to dance with them again.

WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE A DANCE PARTNER? When attending a social night, you don’t have to come with a dance partner. A social night is designed so that you learn some dance steps AND meet new people. Part of the fun of dancing is figuring out how to dance not only the steps you are taught, but also how to dance them correctly with a partner.

WHAT ARE MEDAL CLASSES? Medal Classes are specialised courses designed to cover the more technical aspects of ballroom dancing. It’s a good way to progress your skills in areas that are difficult to teach in the social classes. At the end of each course you have the opportunity to complete an exam and receive a mark from the the Queensland Associated Dance Studios (QADS). You don’t have to do the exam, but it can provide you with a nice sense of achievement at the end.
